Aseila: Execution of an Unarmed Civilian

In the village of Aseila in the Hama countryside, an unarmed Alawite civilian man was summarily executed. He carried no weapon. He posed no threat. He was killed in his own village because of his religious identity — and the video documentation records this without ambiguity. Aseila is a smaller data point in the vast landscape of violence that swept across Hama and Lattakia and Tartous and Homs in March 2025. But it is also the whole story in miniature. Every massacre begins with the decision to treat a human being as a target rather than a person. Every mass atrocity is built from individual acts of killing, each one a choice made by a human being to end another human being's life based on nothing more than identity. The man killed in Aseila had a name that has not been recorded here. He had a life, a family, a history. The footage of his execution has been preserved not to sensationalise his death but to testify to it — to ensure that the moment his life was taken is not erased, not forgotten, not absorbed into a statistic. He was a person. He is a martyr.
