Barmaya: HTS Militants Kill Unarmed Alawite Civilians, Stage Scene
In Barmaya, a village in the Tartous countryside, HTS militants killed unarmed Alawite civilians. What followed the killings revealed a calculated attempt not just to commit the atrocity but to control how it would be remembered.
After the killings, the militants dressed the bodies of their victims in military uniforms — to reframe murdered civilians as General Security members or regime remnants, to transform evidence of a massacre into the image of a legitimate military engagement. The staging was deliberate, methodical, and designed for dissemination.
Multiple eyewitnesses — survivors who came forward on camera, at personal risk — exposed what had been done. Their testimonies describe the same sequence: the killings of unarmed people, and then the dressing of their bodies by the same men who killed them. The gap between what happened and what HTS attempted to present as having happened is itself a form of evidence.
The staging in Barmaya is part of a documented pattern in which armed factions sought to manage the media narrative around their actions in the coastal region — to pre-empt accountability by constructing an alternative version of events before the truth could be established. The eyewitnesses who spoke out refused to allow that version to stand unchallenged.
